TOLIVER NAMED THE 2008 NANCY LIEBERMAN AWARD TOP POINT GUARD

DETROIT, MI, April 5, 2008 -- The Rotary Club of Detroit announced today that Maryland junior Kristi Toliver has been selected as the 2008 Nancy Lieberman Award winner. The award recognizes the nation’s top collegiate point guard in women’s Division I basketball. The criteria for the award are the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills that personified Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman during her career. Sportswriters from across the country determined the award winner and finalists.

The three finalists (in alphabetical order) are: Leilani Mitchell (Utah), Renee Montgomery (Connecticut), and Andrea Riley (Oklahoma State).

Toliver, the 5-7 point guard, helped Maryland (33-4) make the Elite Eight for the second time in three years. She was selected to the 10-member All-America teams by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). Toliver, a member of the NCAA Spokane Regional All-Tournament team, has also been selected an All-American by the Associated Press (AP) and Sports Illustrated.

With a career-high 17.1 ppg and over 1,000 career points, Toliver led the ACC in assists per game and ranks fifth in the nation with 7.4. She broke the ACC’s single-season assist mark (275), a record that stood for 30 years. She also broke the school records: most three-pointers made (78) and career threes made (209).
