LATTA NAMED THE 2006 NANCY LIEBERMAN AWARD TOP POINT GUARD

DETROIT, MI, March 31, 2006 --  The Rotary Club of Detroit announced today that North Carolina junior Ivory Latta has been selected as the 2006 Nancy Lieberman Award winner.   The award recognizes the nation's top collegiate point guard in women's Division I basketball.   The criteria for the award are the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills that personified Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman during her career.    Sportswriters from across the country determined the award winner and finalists.

The three finalists (in alphabetical order) are:   Megan Duffy (Notre Dame), Lindsey Harding (Duke), and Cappie Pondexter (Rutgers).

Latta, the 5-6 point guard, has helped the 33-1 Tar Heels reach their first Final Four since their 1994 title season.     She is averaging 18.6 points and 5 assists per game along with 84 three-pointers this season.   Latta ranks second in school history for career three-pointers and is seventh in assists.   Among her many 2005-2006 honors, she was selected the US Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) and ESPN.com Player of the Year.   She was also named to the Associated Press and ESPN.com All-America first-teams.   North Carolina won the ACC regular season and tournament championships and earned its first No. 1 ranking.
