JOHNSON NAMED THE 2005 NANCY LIEBERMAN AWARD TOP POINT GUARD

DETROIT, MI, April 1, 2005 -- The Rotary Club of Detroit announced today that Louisiana State University senior Temeka Johnson has been selected as the 2005 Nancy Lieberman Award winner. The award recognizes the nation's top collegiate point guard in women's Division I basketball. The criterion for the award is the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills that personified Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman during her career. Sportswriters from across the country determined the award winner and finalists.

The four finalists (in alphabetical order) are: Jamie Carey (Texas), Kristin Haynie (Michigan State), Ivory Latta (North Carolina) and Cappie Pondexter (Rutgers). Kristin Haynie, though not a nominee, received write-in votes propelling her to finalist status.

Johnson, the 5-3 guard from New Orleans, La., has helped LSU complete its best regular season in school history, going 27-1. They enter the Final Four with a 33-2 mark. The Lady Tigers posted a perfect 14-0 record in the Southeastern Conference to win the school's first regular season league championship. Johnson is SEC's all-time assist leader and currently ranks sixth in NCAA history. She has started 126 straight games for LSU and ranks second in career starts. The senior ranks third in games played with 128. She has averaged 10.9 points, 9.1 assists and 3.1 rebounds versus ranked opponents. Johnson has been named to the USBWA All-America Team and the AP All-America Second Team.
